What is WebP?
WebP is a new image format that provides lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. WebP lossy images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at an equivalent SSIM index. WebP supports lossless transparency (also known as alpha channel) with just 22% additional bytes. Transparency is also supported with lossy compression and typically provides 3x smaller file sizes compared to PNG when lossy compression is acceptable for the red/green/blue color channels.
Why WebP is Important For SEO?
Google has said it will not penalize websites for using WebP even though it is not a commonly used image format. It does, however, reward websites for having fast loading times so if you can get your page loading time down by switching to WebP then you should do it!
A lot of websites are already using WEBP images because they’re faster to download and load, but they’re also more SEO-friendly than JPEGs. They’re smaller in size, which means they’ll take up less space on your server when you upload them. That means it will be easier for search engines like Google to find and index your images, and that means your website can rank higher in search results!
